Tema 1: Factors that contribute to the underrepresentation of women academics worldwide: A literature review
Tema 2: A fresh look at the female underperformance hypothesis Tema expositor
Expositora: María José Ibañez
Comparison between the performance of female and male-managed firms has long been a subject of research interest. Although the argument is that firms run by women have lower performance than those run by men, there is no agreement on the effects of managerial gender on companies’ financial outcomes. This study conducts a methodological review of quantitative research on the relationship between female business leadership and firm performance from 2010 to 2020. We select empirical models to test the female underperformance hypothesis using a sample of Chilean firms. The findings suggest that managers’ gender does not significantly affect business performance when endogeneity is addressed. This methodological review reveals a significant gap in the research on female managers and firm performance in the Latin American context, and the empirical test provides new evidence in this vein.
Tema 3: Fueling the change: Creating a community of practice for stimulating entrepreneurship and innovation of women in clean energies
Expositora: Katherina Kuschel
This research project aims to address the underrepresentation of women entrepreneurs in Chile’s clean energy sector. Recognizing the critical role of gender diversity in fostering innovation and sustainability, this applied research seeks to identify best practices and test solutions that can significantly enhance women’s participation. Previous research has identified several barriers that women entrepreneurs face (i.e., gender stereotypes and social norms that discourage women from starting a business in a male dominated field, access to finance, limited access to professional networks and mentors, technical and business skill gaps). Additionally, the team of researchers and partnered practitioners have identified specific barriers in the clean energy sector (i.e., technology and capital-intensive industry, typically large-scale projects, requires public-private alliances, regulatory and bureaucratic hurdles). The project brings together a multidisciplinary team of researchers and practitioners dedicated to creating a Community of Practice (CoP) that supports women entrepreneurs in the clean energy sector.
